SOUTHERN SECTION BASEBALL : San Luis Obispo, San Marino Win Titles
ANAHEIM — Tim Kubinsky retired the last nine batters in relief after driving in two runs with a fourth inning double to give San Luis Obispo High School a 4-0 victory over South Hills in the Southern Section 4-A championship game Saturday at Anaheim Stadium.
With John Simmons on third base and Grant Munger on first, Kubinsky hit a one-out double to left, scoring Simmons and Munger. San Luis Obispo (24-4) scored a run in each of the next two innings.
“We knew we were going to get to him (South Hills starter Cory Lidle),” Kubinsky said. “Once we timed his fastball, we knew we could hit him.”
South Hills (24-6) threatened in the third inning when Shawn Wooten doubled off the wall in left with one out. Wooten took third on Kevin Lidle’s fly ball to center field. However, Jeff Roberts flied out to deep right field, stranding Wooten.
Kubinsky relieved Robbie Weeks in the fifth and struck out four of the last five batters he faced. The Tiger tandem gave up only four hits, three of them singles, and allowed only one runner to reach third base.
