Candidates Have Short Memories
Every few days I receive glossy, professional-looking “statements” by two prominent Long Beach mayoral candidates. When not bashing one another they are quick to trumpet their “leadership,” detailing how they will deal with the ever-worsening problems in the city. And now, because of the current interest in preservation, both say they support limited development in our neighborhoods. Have they forgotten their lack of leadership regarding this issue? Talk about selective memory.
When did development in our once-quaint neighborhoods spin out of control, turning our streets into congested, noisy “mini-slums?” When did land that could have been used for playgrounds, parks and other recreational outlets for youths turn to lucrative developer fodder instead?
When Ernie Kell and Tom Clark were in positions of leadership as mayor and city councilman, that’s when.
