Dance Theater of Harlem Given $1-Million Grant
NEW YORK — The Dance Theater of Harlem has received a $1-million grant and an estimated $250,000 worth of marketing expertise from American Express, the group’s artistic director announced today.
The $1 million, payable over four years, may be used for artistic, educational and social programs, said the artistic director, Arthur Mitchell.
Edwin Cooperman, president of American Express Travel Related Services Co., said his company aims to help raise the annual funding that allows the dance company to perform and reach new audiences.
Early this year, facing a potential $1.7-million deficit, the Dance Theater of Harlem laid off dancers, technicians and some administrative staff for six months.
American Express will also co-sponsor events with local businesses when the dance company tours, helping to expand the series that brings children to dance. It will give seating preference to American Express card holders for some performances.
On Thursday, the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Fund announced a $1-million grant to the troupe.
