SANTA ANA : Baby Nearly Drowns in Bucket of Water
A 1-year-old girl was in critical condition Monday after nearly drowning in a 5-gallon bucket of water, police said.
Stephanie Santos Carlos was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana after the 3:20 p.m. accident at her house in the 500 block of South Broadway, police said.
Stephanie apparently had been playing on the porch near the half-full bucket of water when she fell head first into it, police said.
Other children in the neighborhood witnessed the accident and called Stephanie’s mother, Maria Santos Carlos, for help. The 24-year-old mother pulled her daughter from the bucket and called 911, police said. Stephanie was not breathing at the time, she told police.
Upon arrival, a police officer started to give the child cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Paramedics continued to try and revive Stephanie as they transported her to the hospital.
Since the beginning of the year, five children have drowned in swimming pools or hot tubs in Orange County. Drowning is said to be the leading cause of death in the county among children under 5.
