SWIMMING AT MISSION VIEJO : Evans, East Germans Compete in 4-Day Meet of Champions
Several world-class swimmers, including Janet Evans and members of the East German national team, will compete in the Swim Meet of Champions, which begins today at the Marguerite Recreation Center in Mission Viejo.
The meet, which runs through Sunday, opens with the men’s and women’s 800-meter freestyle races.
Evans and Jane Skillman, two of the United States’ top distance swimmers, will be in the women’s 800. The men’s 800 field will include Artur Wojdat, a member of Poland’s 1988 Olympic team, and Sebastian Wiese of East Germany, ranked fifth in the world.
Besides Wiese, who is also ranked seventh in the 1,500 meters, the East German team includes Sabina Schulze and Christiane Sievert. Schulze is ranked seventh in the 200-meter freestyle and 10th in the 100-meter freestyle. Sievert is ranked eighth in the 100-meter butterfly.
Evans, who won three gold medals in the 1988 Olympics, is also entered in the 400-meter individual medley Friday. She will be one of 15 swimmers in the meet who will compete for the United States in the Goodwill Games in July.
