North American Boxers Dominate
Two Southern California boxers helped the North American team dominate the European team at Salt Lake City in U.S. Olympic Cup competition.
Oscar de la Hoya of Los Angeles scored a 2-1 decision over Bulgaria’s Kirkor Kirkorov, the silver medalist at the 1990 World Championships’ Challenge, in the 125-pound division.
And at 119 pounds, Tony Gonzales of San Bernardino defeated Dieter Berg of East Germany with a 2-1 decision.

Only Wayne McCullough of Ireland, who scored a 2-1 decision over Timmy Austin of Cincinnati in the 112-pound final, prevented the shutout on the final day.
Jeremy Williams of Fort Dodge, Iowa, scored a unanimous decision over Darius Michalczewski of the West Germany in the 178-pound fight.
Other winners were Cuba’s Roberto Balado in the heavyweight category, Canada’s Ray Downey at 156 pounds, and Cuba’s Candelario Duvergel at 139 pounds.
