USD’s Chen Is Academic All-American
University of San Diego cross-country runner Sue Chen, a 38-year-old senior this past year, was named second-team GTE/CoSIDA at-large academic All-American.
Chen, runner-up in the West Coast Conference championships the past two years, graduated with a 3.92 grade-point average in nursing, made the dean’s list four consecutive semesters and was a member of the national nurses’ honors society.
SURFING
Tom Curren, who may be on his way to becoming the first man ever to regain the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour men’s title, will not participate in the Life’s A Beach Surf tournament July 9 through July 15 at the Oceanside Pier.
Curren is expected to attend the Ocean Pacific Pro tournament in Huntington Beach later next month, however.
The reclusive two-time world champion finished 55th last year after sitting out most of the tour’s events to spend time with his family.
Curren has said that he would limit his participation in this year’s tour for the same reason, but won three of the tour’s first four events this year anyway, placing him on top of the men’s point race.
Life’s A Beach is the largest of the ASP tour’s nine-event summer leg.
