WEEKEND TV : Election Fever Starts to Brew Before the 4th
Two classic movies from 1972, a new cable series and the start of the 1990 election season light up the small screen this pre-Independence Day weekend.
C-SPAN debuts “Election 90,” a weekly program that will focus on the campaigns, issues and candidates in this year’s gubernatorial and congressional elections, Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The first installment examines the Texas governor’s race between Ann Richards and Clayton Williams.
Tonight at 8, Channel 13 will screen Michael Ritchie’s “The Candidate,” starring Robert Redford as a Kennedy-esque lawyer vying for a California Senate seat. Channel 13 also has Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon in the cult classic “Harold and Maude,” Sunday at 6 p.m.
Finally, the one fresh entertainment program on tap this weekend is USA cable network’s “Counterstrike,” premiering Sunday at 10 p.m. The action-adventure series stars Christopher Plummer as a crime-fighting mega-mogul.
