Club Cannibal Cranking Back Up After Taking Off for Three Months : Music: Club will not book heavy punk bands that would draw overflow audiences.
After a three-month hiatus, Club Cannibal is resuming its underground-rock operations Saturday nights at the Meadowlark Country Club in Huntington Beach.
According to Club Cannibal promoter Chris Martin, the Meadowlark management discontinued the shows after several spring concerts by high-profile punk acts, including Social Distortion and Bad Religion, brought overflow crowds and “the police started coming and carding people.”
Meadowlark’s operators “wanted to do something softer for a while, get away from the crazy Mohawks,” Martin said.
With Club Cannibal’s resumption, he said, “we’re not going to do any heavy punk bands” that will draw overflow audiences.
Joyride, Dead, White & Blue and Knights of the Living Dead play tonight. Other upcoming Cannibal bookings include the Relics and Arab and the Suburban Turbans on July 7, Haight Club, Blue Movie and Falling Idols on July 14, the Weirdos on Aug. 4, Cadillac Tramps on Aug. 18 and the Vandals on Aug. 25. Shows will begin at 9 p.m., with admission $7 or $8.
Martin and his Club Cannibal partners, J.P. Boquette and Karen Mitchell, are also promoting all-ages shows on Friday nights at the Astor Ballroom, an upstairs hall at 309 N. Main St. in Santa Ana. The hall is dubbed the Bone Room on concert nights.
“We’re trying to give the kids a place to go with no booze, and see music,” Martin said. Cadillac Tramps and Boris will play Friday, Big Drill Car will appear July 6 and Johnny Monster & the Nightmares, Wild Bill and Salvage Remains will play July 13. Shows start at 7:30 p.m., with admission $9. Information: (714) 960-7067.
