L.A. County’s Redistricting Plan Puts Edelman in Latino District
From my perspective as a former (and future) resident of L.A. County’s 1st District, I feel I should point out that the voters are looking for appropriate actions--not ethnic identities.
In redistricting, it is unfair to all of us when the process isn’t colorblind. The idea is not to have “the black district,” “the white district,” “the Latino district,” and so on. The process is based on area identities rather than ethnic identities.
I know as a black that I’d get trampled in “the Latino district.” So would all other ethnic groups. That’s why it is so important to disallow ethnic criteria in drawing districts. Shame on the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (plaintiff in the redistricting lawsuit) for this attempt to disenfranchise the rest of the San Gabriel Valley’s populace!
