Tuning into “All My Children” after not having watched it for several years, it occurred to me that soap operas are indirectly promoting instability in our society. Let me explain.

I recently saw a soap opera magazine picture of Erica in a group shot with all of her ex-husbands and ex-lovers (about eight or 10 men). In addition, the characters of Nina and Cliff were married a whopping four times to each other. And most of the young characters (under 25) are already into their second marriages, such as Dixie and Tad.

Does this set a good example for the youth in our society, indicating that divorce is OK at the drop of a hat? Divorce is a very serious issue, yet on the soaps it is portrayed as virtually “no big deal.” Other daytime and nighttime soap operas are equally guilty of this practice, not just “All My Children.”
