THE SIDELINES : Basketball Game Springs Leak
MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — A game at the Americas Zone Junior Men’s Basketball Championship was rained out. Yes, rained out.
Puerto Rico led Canada, 17-9, with just over six minutes gone Sunday when water cascaded to the floor of the Cilindro Municipal Stadium. The drainage system on the roof had sprung three major leaks and couldn’t handle the runoff from a torrential rainstorm.
Play was suspended, and tournament organizers said the game would resume Tuesday night.
“Anything that could possibly happen to us to make us tougher in preparation for next year has happened,” said Canada Coach Ken Olynyk in a phone interview with the Lethbridge Herald.
