While the race tracks were fast at several courses across the country, some of the thoroughbreds were even faster. Track records were set or tied on Sunday at courses in California, New York, New Hampshire and New Mexico.

Earn Your Stripes tied the American record for six furlongs on turf with a time of 1:07 2/5 at Hollywood Park in Inglewood.

The winner, a 34-1 long shot ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, beat favored Sam Who by three-quarters of a length in the fifth race.

Even the quarter horses were setting records. The aptly named Dash for Speed ran the 400-yard course in 19.53 seconds to win the $50,000 Anne Burnett Handicap at Los Alamitos Race Course, eclipsing by .04 the 14-year-old track record of She’s Precious.

Among thoroughbreds, Ten Keys set a track record in winning $250,000 Grade III New Hampshire Sweepstakes Handicap at Rockingham Park in Salem, N.H. The Maryland-bred horse, ridden by Craig Perret, sizzled over the 1 1/8-mile course in 1:47 3/5, one-fifth off the year-old mark.

At Fingers Lakes Race Track in Canandaigua, N.Y., Candid Cameron breezed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49 3/5, fourth-fifths of a second faster than the record set last year by Matthew’s Moment and 1 2/5 better than the old stakes mark established by Embrace’s Sybling in 1987 and tied by Packett’s Landing in 1989.

Not to be outdone, Arctic Queen posted the fastest 1 1/8 miles ever for fillies or mares at Finger Lakes in the $118,100 New York Oaks. The time--1:43 2/5--was one-fifth faster than Strike Us Rich’s 1986 stakes mark.

Token Dance set a stakes record to win the $82,950 Prioress Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at New York’s Belmont Park.
