WORLD IN BRIEF : CANADA : Hundreds Protest Mohawk Blockade

Hundreds of angry Canadians gathered to protest at a Mohawk Indian blockade on a bridge into Montreal. The armed Indians have held the Mercier Bridge for five days in sympathy with fellow Mohawks in the nearby town of Oka, who are holding out against plans to expand a golf course onto ancestral lands. Tension remained high at the bridge as Indians armed with assault rifles maintained an uneasy truce with police.
