WORLD : Accident Kills 5 Israeli Soldiers
JERUSALEM — A stray artillery shell accidentally exploded today near a group of soldiers on a training exercise, killing five and wounding 10, the Israeli army command said.
Three of the wounded suffered serious injuries, the military said.
The accident occurred this morning while a reserve unit was conducting an exercise involving the capture of a position at a training base in southern Israel, it said. The military command released no further details.
Army officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said the accident was at a military base near Tzeelim in the southern Negev desert, 15 miles from the Egyptian border.
