The Michigan Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of a special education student who was barred from playing basketball by the Michigan High School Athletic Assn. because he was too old.
The boy’s parents and Cardinal Mooney High School in Mount Clemens, Mich., had asked the organization for dispensation from the rule that kept John McClellan from playing with the basketball team once he turned 19 during the 1986-87 school year.
McClellan had been allowed to practice and play with the team in the last few minutes of games since transferring from an institution for students with emotional and learning disabilities in the 1985-86 term.
