Kendall Notches Another Trans Am Win

Tom Kendall of La Canada continued his winning ways on the Trans Am auto racing circuit Sunday, taking the checkered flag at the Des Moines Grand Prix.

Kendall, who won the Cleveland Grand Prix last week and is the overall leader in Trans Am points standings, averaged 71.24 m.p.h. in his Chevrolet Beretta for the 124.2-mile race at Des Moines, which consisted of 69 1.8-mile laps through the downtown streets of the Iowa capital.

The eighth race in the 16-race Trans Am series will be held July 29 at Braselton, Ga.

Fame is their game: Five graduating seniors from the Glendale area will participate in the 11th annual Hall of Fame all-star football game Saturday night at Citrus College in Glendora.

Mark Garza of Hoover, Paul Traughber of La Canada, Albert Moukosian of Glendale, Pat Kennelly of Crescenta Valley, and Mitch Miller of Flintridge Prep will compete for the West team, which will be coached by Jim Walker of Temple City.

Runners-up: The Crescenta Valley Condors finished second last weekend at the American Softball Assn. Class A state tournament at Riverside.

The Condors, a team of girls aged 18 and younger, lost to the Corona Red Devils, 4-2, in the championship game.

On to college: Jensen Jaraba, an All-Southern Section forward for the La Canada High soccer team, has accepted a scholarship to Cal State Los Angeles.

Jaraba helped lead the Spartans to a 22-2-1 record and their third consecutive Rio Hondo League championship last season. La Canada finished second in the 1-A Division, losing, 1-0, to Walnut in the title match.

Going north: Glendale College distance runner Sal Garfias will transfer to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the fall.

Garfias was the Vaqueros’ top runner for much of the cross-country season before he was overcome by shin splints. He helped Glendale finish second in the Western State Conference.

San Luis Obispo won the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. cross-country title last November and dethroned Cal State L.A., the four-time defending CCAA track champion, in May.
