The 2,000-year-old Colosseum, the Eternal City’s most famous landmark, will undergo its first complete checkup in nearly two centuries.

A group of Rome University archeologists, engineers and historians announced Wednesday a two-year project to assess the stability of the ancient amphitheater.

Project Colosseum will use thousands of air and ground photographs to study the stability and condition of every part of the 187-foot structure.

Using the photographs, computers will make mathematical models of the Colosseum to analyze its weak points and study their susceptibility to earthquakes and traffic vibrations.
