PRO TEAM TENNIS : Frazier, Amiach Pace the Dukes Past Raleigh Edge
Amy Frazier and Sophie Amiach led the Newport Beach Dukes past the Raleigh Edge, 28-22, in a Pro Team Tennis match Wednesday in Raleigh, N.C.
The match was tied at 10 games going into mixed doubles when Amiach and Marty Davis defeated Tim Pawsat and Beth Herr, 6-4. Pawsat and Herr led, 4-2, before Amiach and Davis rallied.
The Dukes (4-1) then took a 16-14 lead, which Frazier improved to 22-17 by defeating Shaun Stafford, 6-3.
But the Edge pulled within one game in the final match, women’s doubles, when Herr and Stafford took a 5-1 lead over Frazier and Amiach. But Frazier and Amiach came back to win 6-5, with a 5-4 victory in the tiebreaker.
Frazier and Smith’s record is 3-2 with their three victories coming on tiebreakers in which they trailed, 2-4.
That gave the Dukes their final winning margin. Raleigh’s (1-4) only victory this season came against Newport Beach in the season opener.
The Dukes are in second place in the West Division behind the Los Angeles Strings (3-0).
Newport Beach took an early lead when Marty Davis and Roger Smith defeated Tim Wilkison and Pawsat, 6-4.
Raleigh tied the match at 10 when Wilkison defeated Smith, 6-4.
