A Green Daydream

OK golfers, admit it. There are those occasions, rare as they may be, when you find yourself sitting at work, wishing you could be on the greens instead. But excuses that would satisfy the boss are hard to come by.

Well, here’s one that might do the trick. The Poinsettia Foundation Inc., a nonprofit Ventura County school for abandoned and abused children, will be holding its first Golf Classic fund-raiser July 25 at Soule Park in Ojai.

Yes, that’s on a Wednesday, the middle of the workweek.

“It’s a big golfing day for doctors as well as upper management people,” organizer Charles Newcombe said. So your boss may actually join you. Registration is at 10 a.m., tee-off at 12:30 p.m., and a barbecue is scheduled about 4 p.m. Cost to enter is $350 for a foursome.

The four-year-old foundation runs six group homes that house 36 children ages 8 to 18. Five of the homes are in Ventura, and one is in Oxnard. “Most of the kids come to us from the unified school districts, some from court referral and some from mental health agencies,” Newcombe said.

Newcombe said the organization would like to raise at least $10,000 to help pay for instructional computers and for the upgrading of the reading lab. For information call 656-1881 or 643-5461.
