THE SIDELINES : Sanchez in Mercedes Cup Semis
STUTTGART, West Germany — Third-seed Emilio Sanchez of Spain beat Marcelo Filippini of Uruguay, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, today to advance to the semifinals of the $1-million ATP Mercedes Cup.
Sanchez will meet 10th-seed Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia, who led his team to a Davis Cup victory and reached the semifinals at Wimbledon.
The 18-year-old Yugoslav, ranked 24th in the world, overpowered Eric Jelen of West Germany, 6-2, 6-3, in just 51 minutes.
Twelfth-seed Henri LeConte of France struggled early in his quarterfinal match, dropping the first set to Andrei Cherkasov, but then recovered to beat the Soviet, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
LeConte will face ninth-seed Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina in the other semifinal matchup Saturday.
Perez-Roldan, ranked 21st in the world, outlasted Horst Skoff of Austria in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
