STATE : Judge’s Corruption Trial Stalled
SAN FRANCISCO — The start of jury selection in the corruption retrial of U.S. District Judge Robert Aguilar stalled today when he failed to appear because of flu, and the judge ordered a doctor to investigate.
Paul Meltzer, Aguilar’s attorney, announced that Aguilar had a bad cold or flu and needed a day or two of rest to recover. He provided a letter from a doctor who examined Aguilar during the weekend.
U.S. District Judge Louis Bechtle, who has refused Meltzer’s earlier efforts to delay the start of the trial, said the government should find a second doctor to go out to Aguilar’s San Jose home to see if he is, indeed, too ill to attend the trial.
