The NCAA banned Upsala College from postseason play for three years and put the school on probation for five years for major violations in its men’s basketball between 1984 and 1988.
The NCAA Committee on Infractions said the violations by the Division III school in East Orange, N.J., were “as serious as the committee has found . . . in recent years.”
The committee said an unidentified member of the school’s governing body paid five student athletes a total of more than $11,000.
Students are not supposed to receive athletic scholarships or other athletics-related financial aid at Division III schools.
