VOLUNTEERS : Goodwill Seeks Helpers to Train Disabled Workers

Goodwill Industries of Orange County doesn’t just mend and distribute discarded clothing and appliances. Through its vocational program, the nonprofit group offers disabled people an opportunity to build self-esteem and learn a trade so they can find full-time employment in the community.

“We need volunteers who will help us train disabled people while they are learning and bettering their skills here,” says Lincoln Marini of Goodwill’s rehabilitation and general assembly division.

“The disabled need to be instructed and encouraged. They need to be taught how to increase their production. The volunteers need to be very patient and loving people--someone who enjoys seeing someone grow, molding them and giving them a little loving care,” says Marini.

Goodwill Industries in Santa Ana needs 10 volunteers to supervise developmentally disabled individuals who work with various products that require assembly or packaging. The workers package sterile medical equipment, measure and cut paper and also assemble computer boards.

“We are looking for volunteers to ensure quality control and instruct the disabled on how to properly assemble products,” says Andrea Pronk, director of public relations, “and to inspect all products before they’re sent back to the customer.”

Diane Lerchen, the volunteer coordinator, says help is never turned away. “We always need clerical and fund-raising help,” she said. “We will utilize volunteers with skills on all levels.”
