Police Arrest Stabbing Suspect After Standoff
A suspect in a stabbing was arrested Thursday morning after Los Angeles police ended a three-hour standoff by firing tear gas into his North Hollywood apartment, authorities said.
Wilber Weatherly, 47, surrendered about 3:30 a.m. after a Special Weapons and Tactics team fired a tear-gas canister into a second-floor apartment in the 11500 block of Magnolia Avenue, Lt. Stuart Maislin said.
Weatherly, who was treated for exposure to tear gas and arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, was held without bail at County Jail.
The incident started shortly before midnight when police and paramedics responded to a report of a stabbing at the nine-unit apartment building. Maislin said a man, whose identity was not released, told officers that he had been in Weatherly’s apartment when Weatherly stabbed him during an argument. The man ran out of the apartment and called for help.
The victim was taken to Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills where he was treated for a superficial chest wound, Maislin said.
Police said Weatherly remained locked in his apartment and refused to come out or talk to officers. The other eight units were evacuated as a precaution and the SWAT team was called. After three hours, tear gas was fired.
