Man Who Tried to Flee Rescued From Cliff Wall
A man who attempted to flee from authorities by climbing hundreds of feet up a sheer rock cliff near Matilija Dam was rescued by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, a sheriff’s official said Saturday.
Leroy Voyid, 31, of Oak View was cited for trespassing Friday in a restricted area of the dam, Lt. Gary Backman of the Sheriff’s Department said.
A sheriff’s helicopter and a search-and-rescue team was called in to keep Voyid from climbing farther up the cliff, Backman said.
Jim Logsdon, who oversees the dam, said he called the Sheriff’s Department after seeing a man climbing about 300 feet up the cliff. He said he warned the man to get down, but the man continued to climb.
The dam is fenced, and signs are posted warning trespassers from entering, he said. The lake is a favorite spot for illegal swimming, he said.
