SPORTSCOPE : Playa del Rey Lifeguard Will Compete Overseas
Diane Graner of Playa del Rey, a lifeguard at Marine Street in Manhattan Beach, heads the list of county competitors in the World Interclub Lifesaving Championships in Lubeck, West Germany. More than 2,500 competitors from 20 nations comprise the 160 teams entered.
South Bay county team members include Bill Bishoff (Manhattan Beach) and Tom Fink (San Pedro). Veteran lifeguard Dick Garrett (Hermosa Beach) will serve as coach and Merrill Riley (Hawthorne) has been named team manager. The event concludes Thursday.
Antone Williamson, a third baseman from Torrance High, has been selected to play for Team America in the Goodwill Series VI in Japan. The seven-game series against Japanese and Korean high school all-star teams begins Aug. 19.
The Los Angeles Senior Women’s Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 23-24 at Rancho Park Golf Course. Entry deadline for the 36-hole event is Saturday. Information: (213) 485-4871.
The annual Junior Manhattan Beach Open volleyball tournament continues today at the city pier, featuring boys’ and girls’ teams 18 years and under. Information: (213) 545-5621, Ext. 321.
Teams in a men’s six-man volleyball league and a 16-inch slow pitch softball league in Manhattan Beach are now forming. Residents of both Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach are eligible to play volleyball, which costs $150 a team. Registration ends Aug. 31. Play begins Sept. 4 at Aviation Gym.
