Credit Card Debt Tops $225 Billion: Outstanding consumer credit card borrowings topped $225 billion in 1990, almost triple the $80.2 billion outstanding in 1980, according to an analysis by the Nilson Report, a Santa Monica newsletter. About 110.4 million Americans own a total of 1.002 billion cards, averaging 9.1 cards per holder, the newsletter said.
