Wilkens Will Slam Into Michael Jordan

Dominique Wilkens, the 1990 NBA all-star slam dunk champion, will challenge previous winner Michael Jordan at a postgame slam-dunk exhibition at the Seagram’s Coolers All-Star Basketball Classic Tuesday at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Other competitors expected are Kenny Smith, runner-up in the 1990 NBA slam dunk contest, former winner Spud Webb, Jerome Kersey, Sean Kemp, Byron Scott, Reggie Miller, Danny Manning and Reggie Theus. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

John Wagner and Ronnie Kelly each had two hits and drove in a run to lead the San Diego Collegiate League all-star team to a 5-3 victory and a three-game sweep of the Arizona Collegiate League all-stars. Dan Nerat earned his second victory of the season when he pitched two hitless innings in relief, striking out three.

The Alaska Goldpanners, a team coached by SDSU baseball Coach Jim Dietz, including 10 current or incoming Aztecs players, won the championship of the U.S. Open Baseball tournament with a 9-1 victory over Florida.

The Goldpanners, which finished 8-0 in the tournament, were led by Bill Dunckel and Steve Dietz. Each had two hits and two RBIs.

SOCCER

The La Jolla Nomads boys soccer team won the Under-19 Gold division championship to highlight the final day of the San Dieguito Surf International Classic, a tournament that featured 202 teams in 16 divisions.

The Nomads edged San Pedro Soccer Club, 2-1, on penalty kicks in the final after a scoreless overtime. The Nomads advanced in the semifinal round earlier in the day by defeating Huntington Beach, 1-0.

The San Dieguito Surf’s Under-19 girls lost in the Gold division final to the Fountain Valley Wolfpack Sting, which won 2-1 on penalty kicks. Three other San Diego area teams won championships: the Villa Brats’ under-15 and under-14 girls, and the Surf’s under-13 girls.
