A mid-morning crash Thursday on Otay Mesa Road killed the driver of a car who police say veered into oncoming traffic to avoid a coyote. The car collided with a van, then was broadsided by an 18-wheel tractor-trailer truck.

“The (westbound) vehicle crossed over four solid yellow lines into eastbound traffic,” said Dave Cohen, a spokesman for the San Diego Police Department.

The driver of the car, Rosa Yolanda Medrano, 21, of San Diego, was pronounced dead at the scene, Deputy Coroner Bill Leard said.

The accident occurred at 7:22 a.m. between Dillons Trail and Heritage Road, about 2 miles east of Interstate 805. The California Highway Patrol shut down the eastern segment of California 905, which leads to Otay Mesa Road, for about 2 hours.

The two occupants of the van were taken to Chula Vista Community Hospital. Gabriel Carranza, 24, and Enrique Carranza, 22, both of San Diego, were treated for minor injuries, hospital spokeswoman Kim Berry said.

The truck driver was not injured, police said.
