Thad A. Long; Owned Stationery Stores

Thad A. Long, who owned two Los Angeles stationery and printing stores, has died at his Westlake Village home. He was 72.

Long died Friday of a heart attack, said his wife, Betty Jane Long.

Born June 28, 1918, in Independence, Mo., he came to California in 1939. During World War II, he served as a chaplain’s assistant in the U.S. Army. After he was discharged from the service, he opened AAA Stationers and Printers in Los Angeles and two years later opened a second store in the Hollywood Hills area.

In 1963, he moved to Mexico to serve as general manager of the Mexico City Times, an English-language newspaper in Mexico City. He held the position for about five years and in the late 1960s returned to the United States. He sold his two stores shortly afterward.

Long was a longtime member of the Conejo Valley Masonic Lodge and the Conejo-Westlake Shrine Club.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Candy Brown of Newport Beach and Cydney Long Goldberg of Atlanta; a sister, Madeline Odekirk of Denver; and three grandchildren.

A funeral is scheduled to be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Church of the Hills at Forest Lawn Memorial Park-Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive in Los Angeles. Burial will follow. Forest Lawn Mortuary-Hollywood Hills is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Long’s name to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Westlake Village.
