Lakewood : Half-Cent Sales Tax for Jails Endorsed

A proposition on the November ballot to raise the sales tax in Los Angeles County by one-half cent in order to build jails was endorsed Tuesday night by the Lakewood City Council.

Backers of Proposition A, known as the Local Communities Safety Act, say it would generate enough additional tax money to cover the cost of new jails for 22,273 inmates and 2,084 juveniles over the next 10 years.

The council recommended that residents vote no on Proposition C, which would also raise the local sales tax by a half-cent. That additional revenue would go to pay for public transit projects.
