SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Redlands Gets Past La Verne
Running backs Curt Landreth and Kurt Bruich each scored touchdowns and Redlands defeated La Verne, 22-13, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at La Verne.
Redlands improved to 2-0. La Verne is 1-1.
Landreth, who led the SCIAC in rushing last season with 1,215 yards, gained 72 yards in 21 carries and scored on a one-yard run and 10-yard pass play from Brian Harmon.
Bruich scored on a one-yard run and a six-yard pass from Harmon.
Chris Nance rushed for 125 yards in 19 carries and had a 42-yard touchdown run for La Verne.
Occidental 38, Whittier 13--Freshman tailback Brian Manlangbayan scored three touchdowns to lead the Tigers (1-1) past the Poets (0-1) in a SCIAC game at Eagle Rock.
Pomona Pitzer 42, Colorado College 35--Scott Hamburg completed 18 of 31 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns, including the 21-yard game-winner to Nate Kirtman with 37 seconds left at Colorado Springs, Colo.
Chris Smith gained 121 yards in 26 carries and scored touchdowns on a 53-yard run and 48-yard pass reception for Pomona Pitzer (1-0).
UC Santa Barbara 22, Cal Lutheran 6--Mike Curtius completed 16 of 30 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gauchos (1-1) in a nonconference victory over the Kingsmen (0-2) at Thousand Oaks.
Curtius teamed with Johnny Ace on a 52-yard scoring play and with Matt Perry on an 11-yard touchdown play in the second quarter.
San Diego 31, Claremont-Mudd 7--John Ek scored two first-quarter touchdowns within 49 seconds to spark the Toreros (2-0) in a nonconference win over Claremont-Mudd (0-1) at San Diego.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 32, Sonoma State 7--Senior running back Joe Fragiadakis rushed for 85 yards in 18 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of one and 37 yards to lead the Mustangs (2-0) to a nonconference victory over the Cossacks (1-2) at San Luis Obispo.
