Gulls Cut One Player, Add Two Others
The San Diego Gulls cut one player and added two to their training camp roster, General Manager Don Waddell announced Sunday.
With the addition of goaltender Scott Brower and center Jackson Penney and the cut of center Kraig Nienhuis, the Gulls have 28 players, 11 signed.
Brower, who played in the New York Rangers’ farm system in Flint, Mich., last season, had a 7-7-3 record and a 4.45 goals against average in 21 games. Penney, who played at Prince Albert of the Western Hockey League, scored 53 goals in 55 games.
The Gulls open their season at home Friday against Salt Lake City.
WATER POLO
UC San Diego lost both its matches on the final day of the Northern California Tournament at Stanford. Fresno State, ranked seventh nationally, defeated UCSD, 9-8. The Tritons then lost to No. 1 Cal, 9-4.
Jay Hagan scored three goals against Fresno State and one against Cal, and Kevin Vance scored three against Cal and five for the day. Freshman goalie Andy Bruce had 18 saves in two games for UCSD (2-15).
GOLF
Mildred Stanley of Escondido was one of 64 to qualify for today’s match play of the 1990 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship at the 5,982-yard, par-72 Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley, Pa.
Stanley’s scores were 82 and 80 in two rounds.
Hometown favorite Carol Semple Thompson of Sewickley and Sally Voss Krueger of San Francisco led the field at 149.
