Golden West College Offers Captioned and French Films

HUNTINGTON BEACH —  Golden West College is offering two film series, one of specially captioned films for seniors and the hearing-impaired and one featuring some major figures of French movie-making. All screenings are in the Forum II theater on the campus, at 15744 Golden West St.

The captioned films are being shown Tuesdays at 3 p.m. The series continues

* today with “Country”;

* Oct. 9 with “Eleanor and Franklin: The Early Years”;

* Oct. 16 with “The Man From Snowy River”;

* Oct. 23 with “High Society”;

* Oct. 30 with “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”;

* Nov. 6 with “Murphy’s Romance”;

* Nov. 13 with “Terms of Endearment”;

* Nov. 20 with “Kramer vs. Kramer”;

* Nov. 27 with “Against All Odds”;

* Dec. 4 with “Butterflies Are Free,” and

* Dec. 11 with “Romancing the Stone.”

The French films, being shown Fridays at 7:30 p.m., continue

* this week with “The Little Thief” by Claude Miller, a companion piece to Truffaut’s “The 400 Blows”;

* Oct. 12 with “Carmen” by Francesco Rosi with Placido Domingo;

* Oct. 19 with Marcel Carne’s “Children of Paradise,” the story of a group of performers who achieve fame but not happiness (the cast includes Jean-Louis Barrault);

* Oct. 26 with “Sincerely Charlotte” directed by and starring Isabelle Huppert, the story of a woman who ends up with a dead husband and big trouble; and

* Nov. 2 with Jean-Loup Hupert’s “Le Grand Chemin,” the story of a 9-year-old boy facing his parents’ separation.

Admission to the captioned series is free with a Gold Key card, available to anyone over 60 or suffering from hearing impairment for a onetime fee of $3. The card is also good for admission to other events including plays, seminars and workshops. It also is good for 50 cents off the $3.50 admission charge for each of the French films.
