These are the candidates running for two seats on the Saddleback Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees in the Nov. 6 election.
Roberta (Bobbee) Cline
Age: 45
Occupation: Incumbent; community volunteer
Background: Appointed to the school board at the end of the last school year; has been active in the PTO; founded an education lobbying group for parents; has served as the Orange County chairwoman of the California Movement for Educational Reform; named 1989 Woman of the Year by the state Senate for her volunteer work in education.
Issues: Wants to expand parental involvement in school matters; supports a strong finearts program.
Dore J. Gilbert
Age: 40
Occupation: Incumbent; dermatologist
Background: Served on the school board for the past nine years; helped to institute more rigorous graduation requirements, raising the percentage of college- bound students.
Issues: Advocates strictly enforced substance abuse policies and a balanced budget with a reserve fund.
Mark R. Lopez
Lopez is stationed with his Army Reserve unit in Saudi Arabia, according to his family. Information and photo not available.
Linda McLandrich
Age: 38
Occupation: Educator
Background: Works as a home teacher for ill or injured children in the Capistrano and Saddleback Valley Unified School Districts; a former election worker for the Orange County Registrar of Voters; belongs to the Valencia Elementary PTA and the American Assn. of University Women.
Issues: Plans to address student safety, classroom crowding and fiscal spending; claims the school board has failed to listen to parents when making important decisions.
Charles Wall
Age: 42
Occupation: Small businessman
Background: Resident of Trabuco Canyon for 15 years; served for 13 years on the Trabuco Canyon Water District Board of Directors.
Issues: Advocates the elimination of executive sessions before 10:30 p.m. during board meetings; wants regional electoral districts; advocates emphasis on college preparation and vocational training, with equal programs for fine arts and athletics.
