COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Ernie Stewart, a forward with Willem II of the Netherlands first division, was called up to the U.S. national soccer team today for next week’s game in Poland.
Stewart, 21, was born in Veghel, Netherlands, and lived in the United States from 1971 to ’76. He now lives in the Dutch city of Uden and is tied for the league lead this season with five goals. Last year, he scored 14 goals for VV Venlow of the Dutch second division.
Stewart’s father is American and his mother Dutch. This will be his first time with the U.S. national team.
Goalkeeper Tony Meola, midfielders Paul Caligiuri, Tab Ramos and John Harkes and defender Steve Trittschuh were recalled for next Wednesday’s match in Warsaw. The Americans, 0-3 in the World Cup, will have most of their regular starters for the first time since the tournament in June.
