BELIEVE IT OR DON’T: British popsters swoon...

BELIEVE IT OR DON’T: British popsters swoon for a new trend every month, but this is ridiculous . Last month, the country’s No. 1 song (that’s right--the country that gave us David Lloyd George, Boy George and George Michael) was “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polkadot Bikini” by Bombalurina. Now what’s No. 1? Would you believe . . . “The Joker” by Steve Miller? How does such an antique reach the top of the British charts in 1990? According to Capitol Records, “The Joker” was prominently featured in a recent Levi’s jeans commercial. The track became so popular that Capitol re-released it as a single--and voila-- it’s a hit. . . . And congrats to KROQ-FM deejay the Poorman, who nabbed a fakester passing himself off as comic-pitchman Joe Piscopo. Tipped off by the real Joe’s agent, Poorman had the fakester on his show the other night. After the fakester discussed his latest career moves, Poorman produced the real Joe (on the phone from New York), his attorney (and a hidden “Hard Copy” crew, which was filming the proceedings). The fake Joe was served with a cease-and-desist order--and roundly dissed over the air by the real Joe. “Piscopo isn’t going to press charges,” Poorman said. “But he really nailed him. He handled the whole thing with good humor.”
