32 WHO DIED IN OPERATION DESERT SHIELD

Here is a Pentagon list of the 31 accidental deaths and one self-inflicted gunshot fatality of U.S. military personnel involved in Operation Desert Shield:

Aug. 12: Air Force Staff Sgt. John Campisi, Covina, Calif., a member of the 55th Organizational Maintenance Squadron from Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., struck by a vehicle on a Saudi runway.

Aug. 21: Navy Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class Daniel Jones, Wakefield, Mass., electrocuted while performing maintenance aboard the guided-missile cruiser Antietam.

Aug. 28: 13 Air Force personnel, mostly reservists from the 433rd Military Airlift Wing, Kelly Air Force Base, San Antonio, Tex., killed in the crash in Germany of a C-5A cargo plane:

Maj. John M. Gordon, Spring, Tex., and Maj. Richard W. Chase, Maj. Richard M. Price, Senior Master Sgt. Carpio Villarreal Jr., Master Sgt. Rosendo Herrera, Tech. Sgt. Daniel G. Perez, Tech. Sgt. Lonty A. Knutson, Staff Sgt. Daniel Garza and Staff Sgt. Edward E. Sheffield, all of San Antonio.

Also, Capt. Bradley R. Schuldt, Arlington Heights, Ill., a member of the 7th Air Division, Ramstein Air Base, Germany; Master Sgt. Samuel M. Gardner Jr., Idalou, Tex.; Staff Sgt. Marc H. Cleyman, Jacksonville Beach, Fla., 31st Weather Squadron, Ramstein; Staff Sgt. Rande J. Hulec, Cleveland, 31st Weather Squadron, Ramstein.

Sept. 14: Army Lt. Tommie Bates, Coventry, R.I., a member of the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division, Ft. Stewart, Ga., killed in a vehicle accident in Saudi Arabia.

Sept. 20: Army Spec. Robert Noonan, Cincinnati, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division from Ft. Bragg, N.C., killed in a vehicle accident in Saudi Arabia.

Sept. 26: Marine Staff Sgt. Thomas J. Moran, Cornwells Heights, Pa., died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sept. 30: Air Force Maj. Peter Samuel Hook, Bishop, Calif., and Air Force Capt. James Bernard Poulet, San Carlos, Calif., members of the 4th Tactical Fighter Wing, killed in crash of F-15E fighter.

Oct. 8: Air Force Maj. Barry Henderson, Tuscumbia, Ala., and Maj. Stephen Schramm, Birmingham, Ala., killed in the crash of an Alabama Air National Guard RF-4C Phantom jet.

Oct. 8: Eight Marines killed in the crashes of two UH-1 Huey helicopters from the San Diego-based ship Okinawa in the northern Arabian Sea. They were Lance Cpl. Thomas R. Adams, Baton Rouge County, La.; Capt. William D. Cronin Jr., DuPage County, Ill.; Capt. Gary S. Dillon, Merrimack County, N.H.; Capt. Kevin R. Dolvin, Stark County, Ohio; Capt. William J. Hurley, Cook County, Ill.; Sgt. Kenneth T. Keller, Cook County, Ill.; Sgt. John R. Kilkus, Norfolk County, Mass.; and Cpl. Timothy W. Romei, San Francisco.

Oct. 10: Capt. Fredrick A. Reid of Harrisburg, Pa., and Capt. Thomas R. Caldwell of Columbus, Ohio, killed in the crash of an Air Force F-111 fighter-bomber in the southern Arabian Peninsula.
