For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

* Uproot the plants in your landscape that have overgrown the area and give the yard a fresh new look.

* Tend to your roses. Remove dead wood, twiggy growth, leaves with spots or mildew. Do not prune them now.

* When planting perennials or annuals this fall, prepare the planting bed well. This means digging down as much as 18 inches and working in organic matter.

* For a “berry” good holiday season, plant berried shrubs for garden color and holiday decorations.
