Valencia Crushes Magnolia to Stay Unbeaten
ANAHEIM — Valencia High School Coach Mike Marrujo doesn’t care much for individual statistics these days.
“We try not to make a big deal over stats or making a hero out of a guy,” Marrujo said. “As long as we win, we’re all happy.”
Valencia stayed happy with a 35-0 Orange League rout of host Magnolia Thursday night at Glover Stadium.
Senior tailback John Fewell led the way with 118 yards in 19 carries, and scored four touchdowns--a six-yard run and three one-yard runs.
But Valencia improved its record to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in league with characteristic balance.
Junior running backs Willie Barnes (48 yards rushing, one touchdown) and Ryan Roskelly (38 yards in six carries) helped Valencia amass 226 yards on the ground.
Valencia quarterback Marc O’Brian was also on target, hitting 10 of 12 passes for 177 yards. Valencia punted only once in the game.
Magnolia punter Josh Acosta was one of the busiest players on the field. Valencia’s defense held Magnolia (1-5, 0-2) to 71 yards of total offense and forced Acosta to punt six times.
Magnolia tailback Ariel Courvetier led his team with 58 yards rushing in 19 carries.
