Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON : House Votes Funds for Welk Birthplace

The House voted $52.2 billion for farming, nutrition and rural development programs, including a half-million dollars to renovate the former home of bandleader Lawrence Welk. The money for the Welk birthplace in Strasburg, N.D., is part of a package to help revitalize and encourage tourism for the 700-population community. Other agencies and their appropriations included: Farmers Home Administration, $11.5 billion; Rural Electrification Administration, $334.6 million; Soil Conservation Service, $771.3 million.
