COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : SAN DIEGO STATE : Pieri to Try Out at Free Safety
The Aztecs, in the midst of their second consecutive bye week, are taking a look at Damon Pieri at free safety.
Pieri, a sophomore transfer from Phoenix Community College, has played cornerback this season, but several things convinced Coach Al Luginbill to give him an audition at free safety--inconsistent play at that position, junior Johnny Walker’s foot injury and freshman Marcus Preciado’s rough outing at UCLA Oct. 13. Walker started the first five games of the season, but suffered a mid-foot sprain at Wyoming Oct. 6, allowing Preciado to make his first start. It didn’t go as well as Preciado had hoped.
“I’d grade myself an F,” Preciado said. “I didn’t perform well at all. I had high expectations--it was the chance of a lifetime to start against UCLA.”
SDSU, idle Saturday, remained 106th (last) in the country in total defense (509.3 yards a game) and 105th in scoring defense (39.8).
