Mosaics to be Returned: The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld an Indiana court’s order that a suburban Indianapolis art gallery must return rare stolen Byzantine mosaics to the Republic of Cyprus. Chief Judge William Bauer’s opinion said the court rejected art dealer Peg Golberg’s defense claiming the mosaics were taken from a church that is now controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. In his written opinion, Bauer said the United States has never recognized Northern Cyprus and only recognizes the Republic of Cyprus.
