Dog Days: First Lady Barbara Bush and her dog Millie won’t attend the opening of a new wing at the Dog Museum of America in Town and Country, Mo., but Millie will be represented by a painting. Artist Christine Merrill’s work depicts the English springer spaniel in front of the White House.
Plush Prison?: Seventy-two House members fired off an angry letter to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons late last week charging that former Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega is getting special treatment in his three-room prison cell outside Miami. Rep. Larry Smith (D-Fla.) was incensed after newspapers reported that Noriega has an exercise bike, paper shredder, copier, computer and two safes in his cell. “If the taxpayers are paying for it, it’s disgraceful,” wrote Smith. Defense attorney Jon May said Noriega has the bike because he is not allowed to use the regular exercise facilities. Most of the other items are for handling the classified information connected to his trial. “It’s not because he’s afforded special privileges,” May said, “it’s because he has fewer privileges.”
Game, Set, Match: Police sold Bjorn Borg’s villa at a forced auction last week after the former tennis star failed to pay more than $3.75 million in debts. The three-story villa, in a Stockholm suburb, fetched $1.9 million from Swedish hotel owner Lars Nilsson who said he would use it as a summer house. Borg, a five-time Wimbledon champion, has had financial troubles since his attempts to build a clothing empire failed in 1988.
Back at Work: Prince Charles is about to resume his schedule after recovering from a broken right arm. Buckingham Palace said he will visit a London health center this week. The 41-year-old heir to the throne fell from his polo pony in June. He underwent a bone graft operation last month after the injury failed to heal.
