HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Kearny Breaks Out of Its Doldrums, Defeats USDHS, 28-0
Watching Kearny’s football team run onto the field before a game is like watching a jailbreak scene from an old movie. The team’s jerseys are maroon and white with thick vertical stripes that run from the shoulder pads down to the sleeves. The only thing missing are the serial numbers.
Friday, the Komets were a mean, angry bunch that looked as if they were ready to break out of something , and they did . Kearny broke out of some midseason doldrums with a 28-0 victory over USDHS before 1,500 at Mesa College.
“We lost our focus (after a 57-6 loss to Morse, Oct. 12, which carried over in a 7-7 tie with La Jolla the next week),” Kearny Coach Willie Matson said. “It’s taken a couple of weeks, but (the victory) couldn’t have come at a better time.”
The Komets are 7-1-1 and one victory away from at least a City Western League co-championship with La Jolla. Both teams are 3-0-1 in league. But more important, Kearny, a team with size, speed and high expectations, finally showed signs of putting it all together.
Kearny’s offense was balanced. Two of its touchdowns came on passes; the other two on rushes. USDHS (4-5, 1-2) could do neither against Kearny’s defense, which sacked the quarterback seven times and intercepted three passes.
