WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Point Loma Nazarene (22-8) was defeated by Fresno Pacific College, 10-15, 15-13, 15-13, 2-15, 15-7, in the NAIA District playoffs at Point Loma. Jamie Wheat had 16 kills and Roberta Simpson 14 for Point Loma.

University of San Diego’s Shannon Mutch served five aces to lead the Toreras to a 15-11, 15-9, 14-16, 15-8 West Coast Conference victory against host St. Mary’s. Nikki Wallace was USD’s (13-13, 5-5) kill leader with 16.

Heather Kelley and Stephanie Milbradt each had 16 kills to lead U.S. International over UC San Diego, 16-14, 15-6, 12-15, 15-8, in La Jolla. USIU improved to 10-19. Vlcki Van Duyne had 14 kills and Liz Vesanovic 12 for UCSD (32-8).

MEN’S TENNIS

Jose Luis Noriega of the University of San Diego was upset by eighth-seeded David DeLucia of Notre Dame, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, in the quarterfinals of the Volvo Collegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.

Noriega, a junior, two-time All-American and the tournament’s No. 3-seeded player, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over South Carolina’s David Hopper earlier in the day.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The Great American Bank Tennis Classic has a new title sponsor in Mazda Motor of America, Inc. and will be played at a new site, the La Costa Hotel & Spa in Carlsbad. The seventh year of the tournament, renamed the Mazda Tennis Classic, will be held July 29 through Aug. 4.

Steffi Graf is the two-time defending champion of the tournament, which will feature 28 players in the main singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw.

Mazda is expected to upgrade the $225,000 tournament purse to include a 1991 Mazda car.

WATER POLO

Grossmont Community College, ranked No. 4 in the state, rallied to defeat No. 2 Orange Coast, 9-7, for the second time this season to win the championship of the Orange Empire Conference.

Bryan Reiton, Rodney Jones and Rich Calder each had two goals for Grossmont, which finished the regular season 23-8, 12-0.
