A fire sparked by a welder’s tool engulfed an auto body repair shop in Kearny Mesa, causing an estimated $125,000 in damage, fire officials said Thursday.
The fire, at Custom Auto Body, 7939 Raytheon Road, was ignited about 12:30 p.m. by welders working on a vehicle, authorities said. The contents of the vehicle caught fire and the flames spread.
The Fire Department responded with 27 firefighters and three engines. The building suffered about $60,000 in damage, the contents $50,000 and an adjacent building owned by the company $15,000. An office and an adjoining service area were undamaged.
