From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Ten people died in scattered violence nationwide, South African police said, including five who died in a gunfight between rival black factions in eastern Natal province. In Cape Town, Alfred Nqoboka, deputy mayor of the sprawling black shantytown of Khayelitsha, was found stabbed to death, police said. The motive for the attack was not known, but black town councilors, seen as stooges of the white government, are often targets of violence. African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela, meanwhile, said talks on ending apartheid and giving political power to the black majority could be threatened if the government fails to halt the chronic violence in black townships.
