HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Clara Beats Bishop Diego to Extend Win Streak to Four
Guard Art Barron scored 23 points to lead Santa Clara High to its fourth consecutive victory, a 75-50 win over Bishop Diego on Friday night in a nonleague game.
Santa Clara (7-1) built an eight-point lead at halftime and then blew the game open in the third period. Strong defense allowed the visiting Saints to expand a 34-26 lead into a 53-35 bulge. Barron led the outburst with nine points in the quarter.
The Saints hit three three-point baskets in the first quarter to open a 22-15 lead.
Forward Anthony Maestas added 14 points and guard Chris Cole had 13 for Santa Clara.
In other boys’ games:
North Hollywood 46, Poly 44--Eric Miller scored 12 points to lead North Hollywood (4-2, 3-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Nick Aldaba scored 11 points for Poly and teammate Steve McCann added 10.
Taft 85, Franklin 62--Taft led by 35 points after three quarters, and 12 of 13 Toreador players scored in the nonleague game at home.
Mark Walker led Taft (5-3) with 14 points, and Casey Sheahan scored 13. Eric Dafney and Cornell Hill each added 12. Franklin is 3-3.
El Camino Real 47, Palisades 43--Sam Sarpong scored 14 points and Markee Brown added 11 points and 15 rebounds for El Camino Real (4-1) in a nonleague game.
Kennedy 56, Birmingham 49--Joe Wyatt scored 18 points and Athesis Harris added 16 for Kennedy in a nonleague game. Bobby Winn scored 12 points for Kennedy.
David Garden scored 13 points for Birmingham (0-5), which played without two starters.
Damien 71, Chaminade 64--Kent Cote scored 22 points and Mark Wiltshire added 17 for host Chaminade (3-4) in a nonleague game. Ted Corcoran scored 11 points for Chaminade, which was outscored, 22-12, in the fourth quarter.
Pasadena Poly 48, Moorpark 45--Robbie Salone had 16 points and eight rebounds for Moorpark (1-7) in the consolation semifinals of the Fillmore tournament.
Crescenta Valley 67, Burbank 49--Visiting Crescenta Valley led, 29-26, at halftime in the nonleague game and pulled away in the second half.
Brendon Cowsill scored 19, and Brad Haines added 15 for Crescenta Valley (4-4). Jon Warner led Burbank (1-4) with 23 points.
Camp Kilpatrick 84, Salesian 76 (OT)--The Mustangs employed a run-and-gun offense in the overtime period and outscored Salesian, 10-2, in a nonleague game at Salesian.
Five Camp Kilpatrick (2-4) players scored in double figures. Center Lafrance Bates scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and John Ross added 17 off the bench.
Campbell Hall 108, Windward 48--Taylor Williams came off the bench to score a game-high 26 points and Austin McKellar and 15 and seven steals for Campbell Hall (6-0). C. J. Thompkins added 14 points and Scott Glass contributed 12 and 14 rebounds.
Highland Hall 67, West Valley Christian 40--Edward Anastas and John Klejnot combined for 43 points and 21 rebounds to lead Highland Hall (4-2, 2-0) in a Westside League game at home.
GIRLS
North Hollywood 76, Poly 23--Visiting North Hollywood scored all the points it needed in the first quarter of the Valley Pac-8 Conference game and led 28-6 after one period.
Suzi Shimoyama paced North Hollywood (7-2, 4-0) with 14 points, seven assists and nine steals. Jacinda Sweet scored 12, and Heather Shahbazian had 11.
Cindy Avens scored 17 of Poly’s 23 points.
Brea-Olinda 49, Alemany 40--Rachel Corelli finished with 17 points, including eight in the third quarter, for Alemany (4-4) in the semifinals of the Brea-Olinda Tournament.
Holy Martyrs 39, Cate 35--Aline Altibarmakian scored 21 points to lead Holy Martyrs (3-2) in a nonleague contest.
